Training Plans

This summer I have had alot of fun with my running. I miss running outside, but the Alabama heat and humidity is just too much for me. I know I have improved my speed using the treadmill this summer, and I am looking forward to another *faster* 5k in my future. When I finish my 100 mile Labor Challenge in the next few weeks, I think I wanna start some actual training again. I used the Couch to 5k program when I first started running, and really enjoyed it. I have thought about using it again but at a faster speed for my running intervals than I did in the winter. But I wanted to know what kinds of training you guys are doing. I am a s---l---o---w....runner...and right now I am very content with my 5ks...I just want them faster. In the future, I definitely want to add more mile and eventually run a half, but for now I'd just like to finish my 5ks under 40 minutes :)

Any training plans you guys suggest?

  1. Just wanted to share that I am another S_L_O_W runner...in fact, some may not even call it running. I have learned for me, that interval training (usually run for a set period of time and then walk for a shorter period of time) helps me regroup and has actually worked to improve my times in the 5Ks that I have done (guess it allows for some recovery in between my "runs"). Anyway, I have no official training plan...although I am always open for any suggestions.

Good luck with your continued training...:)

  2. Thanks Kim! :) I am been doing alot of interval work this summer, and I can definitely tell a difference in my speed. (Some days I am convinced I would walk faster than I jog!) But I just keep working at it :)

  3. Hey Jessica - I still haven't made it to the 5k mark (I'm still working through the walk/run program), but I'm curious....what speed are you using on the treadmill?

Perhaps you could still use the interval approach that got you to the 5km distance. For example, if you are running 5km at 3.5mph speed, start doing 1 minute at 5.0 and 4 minutes at 3.5 and repeat 8 times. The next week, make it two minutes at 5.0 etc until that becomes your regular pace. Know what I mean?

  4. Raegun! Thanks for your imput! Currently I am doing either 5.0 or 5.5mph for my runs and 3.5 for my walks. I have been doing quarter mile intervals.
My usual run consists of 1 mile at 5.0mph followed by the quartermile intervals for another mile or two.
I think making the intervals a little shorter and doing more total mileage might be a good idea.

I am sure you will get to the 5k mark soon!

  5. I'm truly slow, but I don't care. I feel good when I run and I'm just doing it for myself. I running a lot, but interspersing some walking because it's so hot and awful here. I'm hoping that my pace improves a bit as it starts to cool down at the end of summer. BTW, I love that you're a children's librarian, too. I think it's the best profession ever.

  6. See!? You are a speed demon by my standards. I go 4.8 for my 'runs'. ;)
